“…the Friendliest club…”
You may have noticed a number of large vessels secured to the ARSBC courtesy docks and even the floating portion of the gas dock over the week following Labor Day. This was not a mirage. All four vessels were heading south but came into the harbor due to Hurricane Dorian. After contacting the pier chairman they were assigned dock space.
On Labor Day weekend, a 42-foot Beneteau sailing vessel and a 44-foot Tollycraft trawler tied up to D dock and C dock, respectively. A 42-foot Kadey Krogen was already tied up at D dock. A 48-foot Kadey Krogen also sought dockage due to the hurricane and was placed at the gas dock.
Three of the vessels began their journey in Nova Scotia while the fourth was coming down from Maine. Two of the owners were planning to spend the winter in the Abaco Islands, Bahamas. The other two boats are headed for Florida. After a day or two at the ARSBC, Hurricane Dorian’s slow progress up the coast forced all of them extend their stay beyond the usual 2-4 days that most transients stay.
As the people from Nova Scotia left Fairhaven they were still unclear of their final destination due to the destruction in the Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian.
Thanks to the assistance of many ARSBC members all four couples were able to enjoy the history of Fairhaven and New Bedford, and get rides for food, laundry, fuel and other necessities when needed.
The following are comments posted in a new Guest Log at the gas dock to record comments and history of the transient vessels using the ARSBC docks and other services.
“Thank you so much for your incredible hospitality and warmth. We have truly been overwhelmed by the friendly and helpful kindness of so many members. This is the Friendliest club we have ever stayed at.”
